BRUSSEL - De Europese schuldencrisis heeft een „systematische dimensie” bereikt en de zorgen over de staatsschulden zijn van kleine economieën verschoven naar grotere landen. Dat zei scheidend president van de Europese Centrale Bank Jean-Claude Trichet dinsdag. Het financiële systeem is volgens hem in gevaar.

„De situatie is verslechterd door het opdrogen van de kredietmarkt. De hoge mate van verweving van het Europese financiële systeem heeft geleid tot een snelle stijging van de kans op besmetting. De financiële stabiliteit loopt gevaar in de gehele Europese Unie en ook de reële economie in Europa en daarbuiten wordt geraakt”, zei Trichet in Brussel tegen het Europese Parlement.

Trichet riep op tot een snelle en beslissende aanpak van de crisis door nationale overheden en Europese instanties. „De situatie wordt alleen maar slechter bij verdere vertraging.”
